Pacquiao Beats Algieri: Round-by-round Recap

By Alon Calinao Dy: Eight-division world champion and reigning WBO Welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao defended his belt and won via unanimous decision against the challenger and WBO Light Welterweight Champion Chris Algieri at the Cotai Arena, Venetian Resort in Macao, China.

Round 1: Chris Algieri kept his distance from the Filipino boxing icon, but Pacquiao dominated this round with some tough blows that connected well to the head and body of his opponent.

Round 2: For the first time, Pacquiao Knocked Algieri down. The Filipino definitely controlled this round as the undefeated American fighter recovered.

Round 3: Pacquiao determined to pick up the aggression against Algieri. He hit the body and face of Algieri with one-two combination.

Round 4: Algieri came out from his shadow and fought Manny aggressively. I'd seen more good action in this round and the exchange of powerful shots.

Round 5: Algieri tried to land a solid punch, but Manny was too quick to deliver a flurry of lethal shots. 

Round 6: Algieri committed a second low blow and was warned by the referee. He was caught by Manny's first straight left and pursued by the right jab that sent him down for the second time. Pacquiao went for a kill. Amazingly, Algieri survived this round.

Round 7: For me, this was the best round of Algieri as he could hit Manny on his belly. 

Round 8: The multi-talented fighter Pacquiao continued to throw a lot of combinations in this round. Algieri tried to complain for a low blow, but unfortunately the referee did not see it and the fight still went along.

Round 9: Algieri moved very comfortably into this round using his reach advantage. But Pacquiao hit him with a powerful left hand that put him down. I thought it was the end of the round because Algieri's legs wobbled like a drunkard. Surprisingly, he was a real tough opponent.

Round 10: In this round, Pacquiao was looking for a KO as Algeria tried to escape being punished by a number of slugs from the Filipino boxing icon.

Round 11: It was apparent that Manny had a great deal to offer in this bout as he continued to give hard blows to the head and body of Chris Algieri. The American boxer was still hopeful to land a strong punch that would slow the pound-for-pound king.

Round 12: In this final round, Algieri embraced Pacman as a sign of respect and the corner of Algieri reminded him that his only way to win this fight was to go for a KO. Undoubtedly, Manny won this contest from one to twelve rounds.

I couldn't believe what I saw, how Pacquiao put Algieri down six times. This was a first defeat of Chris Algieri as he dropped to  20-1 with 8 KOs, while Pacquiao improved to 57-5-2 with 38 KOs.

Manny was asked again if he is willing and ready to fight Floyd Mayweather, Jr., he expressed that "I'm ready to fight him next year." But before that, he jokingly stated about his funny commercial for the foot locker "he's going to fight me!" It actually made me laugh upon hearing this statement from Pacman.

Pacquiao-Algieri Weigh In

By Alon Calinao Dy: Hours remaining the two boxers Manny Pacquiao (56-5-2, 38 KOs) and Chris Algieri (20-0, 8 KOs) will have their showdown at the Cotai Arena, Venetian Resort in Macao, China, for the WBO World Welterweight Championship fight.

Initially, Chris Algieri stepped on the scale and weighed 144.4 pounds, more than the 144-pound weight limit. But he counted back in at 143.6 lbs. Pacquiao, on the other hand, was so confident and  weighed at 143.8 pounds. 

Everyone is super excited! I'm so excited! Let's get it on.

Alon Calinao Dy's Prediction: Algieri vs. Pacquiao

By Alon Calinao Dy: I know Chris Algieri (20-0) is a tough warrior. I know he has reach advantage over Manny Pacquiao. But he is not going to get the World Boxing Organization (WBO) Welterweight Title from the only eight-division world champion and fighter of the decade congressman Manny Pacquiao. I think I'm sure about it.

Chris Algieri defeated Ruslan Provodnikov last June to be Pacquiao's challenger for the WBO welterweight crown. Not bad. I'm impressed. Although I now give him credit for that, I still believe that he has no chance to beat Pacquiao at The Venetian Macao in Macau, China, on Nov. 22. 

As always, this is just a hype to make boxing fans around the world believe that he can actually stop the pound-for-pound king.

But still, it is an exciting fight for both boxers Pacquiao and Algieri, as they are true warriors. I have great respect for them because they have come this far. I mean Algieri has reached this far since this is the biggest bout of his career. Now he has the opportunity to show the world that he can defeat the Filipino boxing champion.

I understand I undestimated Algieri for this upcoming battle. In every fight, there's a real threat. But this is what I see -- NO REAL DANGER! I predict all the scorecards would be in favor of Pacquiao. If the bout would not end by a knockout, then it would be an unanimous decision from the judges. Whoever is a busy fighter and throws a lot of deadly punches, has the chance to get the belt.

As my mind can be as crystal clear as water, I believe Pacquiao is going to win this competition. No doubt about it! Period.

I just hope after this fight, Pacquiao would try everything in his power to challenge the undefeated American boxer Floyd Mayweather, Jr. I am still optimistic that these elite boxers would face each other for the love of boxing and fans around the globe.

Both global icons Pacquiao and Mayweather have unfinished business. I guess the Filipino boxing superstar is going to retire in 2015 because he will run a national office in the coming Philippine Senatorial Election in 2016. Although he can still defend his crown, everything has come to an end. The world of politics would be his last vision and mission to serve his countrymen.

Manny Pacquiao as a PBA Star Player

By Alon Calinao Dy: He is not Lebron James or Kobe Bryant, but he is Manny Pacquiao. The eight-time division boxing champion is going to be the next PBA star player in the Philippines according to some of his avid supporters in the sweet science. What does it mean, Pacquiao rocks?

Pacquiao wants to prove to everybody that he is not only the king in the world of boxing, but he has what it takes to be a good player if not the best player in PBA. 

Manny is Manny, I mean he has a lot of discipline when it comes to training whether it is basketball or boxing. No one can stop his long-time dream to join in PBA. Not even his wife Jinkee or Mommy D.

Many Filipino Basketball fans are still skeptical about this since he has upcoming fight against undefeated boxer and tough challenger Chris Algieri for the WBO welterweight on Nov. 22 at the Venetian Macao in China.

I have no objection for Pacquiao to enter the PBA draft or become a PBA player officially, just as long as he would not take for granted his boxing career because that is where he excels as a world-class athlete. Although Pacquiao has some basketball moves, most PBA fans still believe that he ain't got a chance against the veteran PBA star players like James Yap and Mark Caguiao.
