Why Hand Washing is Extremely important?

By Alon Calinao Dy: Germs are everywhere. If you simply touch a dirty object, then a chance of harboring potentially harmful microorganisms is huge. That's why healthcare workers always emphasize the importance of doing hand washing in any of these following circumstances:
  • Before and after eating
  • Before and after handshaking
  • Before and after cooking
  • After using comfort room
  • Before and after handling the patient
  • After doing household chores
  • After blowing one's nose, sneezing, coughing, etc.
The truth is, good hand washing practice can save many lives.

I have been doing hand washing for many years now. So far, I have not heard about nosocomial infection or hospital-acquired infection in our healthcare facility. It is because mostly everyone who works in our hospital are doing hand washing regularly. I believe that the risk of contracting a disease is less if you maintain good hand hygiene daily. In other words, frequent hand washing is able to protect yourself and other people around you.

But it's sad to say, nowadays, I have seen so many doctors, nurses, and other healthcare workers who are not used to this kind of practice. If they would only realize how so important hand washing is, then they would apply it in day to day life. They forget that it is one way to prevent the spread of many illnesses. As one popular saying would say, "Prevention is better than cure."

I believe that it is not too late for everyone to make hand washing a daily habit. Anyone can make a difference. Hand washing is the first line of defense against the spread of various health problems. It is equally important in doing routine exercises, eating healthy foods, and getting enough sleep.

Admit it or not, we don't want to spend our extra savings in paying high hospital bills. Thus, it is extremely important to make a good investment in our health than regret later on.
