By Alon Calinao Dy: Puerto Rican Superstar Miguel Cotto made history when he defeated WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez to a stoppage in the 10th round of the fight. This was due to the best tandem of Cotto and Pacquiao's legendary coach Freddie Roach at the Madison Square Garden in New York last Saturday night.
Miguel Cotto stated before the much-anticipated bout that Martinez was not under his level when they had a heated conversation during HBO face off with Max Kellerman. Cotto, once again, had proven to everyone that what he told was true. It was a dominating showing from Puerto Rican boxer who stunned and dropped Martinez from opening minute of the 1st round up to the tenth round.
I was wrong when I took for granted Cotto's comments about Martinez's chances of defeating him. I would give Cotto's trainer Roach my credit for transcending the Puerto Rican pugulist in one of the most dangerous fighters in the sport of boxing today.
Martinez admitted that Cotto battered him at the beginning till the end of their bout. He even said in the post fight, "I got caught early and never got going . No excuses he caught me cold." That's what I really admire about the sportmanship of Martinez, even though he lost in one of his biggest fights. I believe he got the respect of the world. Unlike Marquez, eversince he did not accept any defeats to his long rival Pacquiao.
I am sure Cotto's huge followers are very happy now because of his big success in boxing and his best tandem to the future hall-of-fame coach Freddie Roach. Indeed, Roach has successfully developed a new version of Cotto whose power and aggressive styles would be a huge factor to any of his future bouts.
