By Alon Calinao Dy: There are many rape victims in the Philippines and it is now widespread because lots of rapists are usually in the influence of excessive alcohol intake and illegal drugs before committing violent acts.
Recently, female victims were rape inside the UV Express van by two or three men and one of them was caught on CCTV in Quezon City. And after they raped the victims, they tried to steal money from their ATM cards while the van was going around in Caloocan City.
According to the report, one of the confirmed rapists was shot dead by the authority after he tried to grab the pistol of a police officer. Perhaps, justice has been served to the rape victims in this case but the aftermath of rape it created to the survivors is one of the most horrible experiences in their lives.
Swift death penalty is one of the answers to a confirmed rapist to protect our women from sexual assault and rape incident like this. Let us not wait that these rapists and sexual attackers would go unpunished and might victimize and destroy the lives of innocent people.
Also, CCTV plays an important role and is neccessary to catch criminals. Every public utility vehicle should have a hidden and wireless CCTV camera to protect the safety of their passengers.
I think there are a lot of rape instances before but some rape victims do not report this incidence to the authority due to a fear of humiliation and embarassment from the people. I believe one should not be afraid to tell the authorities because you are a victim of this situation and is out of your control.
I encourage every woman to speak up if you are a victim of sexual assault or rape. I always believe that no one has a right to rape a woman even if she wears a short skirt, daring dress, and even though she is a prostitute. Just RESPECT them!
