The Meaning of Alon Dy

Wow. I can't believe I saw the original meaning of my name. This is a coincidence. I don't expect this but most of the descriptions here truly correlate with my personality. I don't know who wrote this. Perhaps, someone in the past. Thanks for this. -- Alon Calinao Dy

The life path number of Alon Dy is 8. People with the life path number 8 are energetic, dynamic with incredible powers of concentration. Their faith can move mountains. This motto stand high in their minds, when you do something, then go all in or don't do nothing. They hate everything mediocre! You are an individualist who is a colossal success or an non-success. However, you can also build your major success in later years. They have an almost magnetic charisma on others who are irresistibly drawn. You can be warm and generous and do a lot for yourself and others. Having outrageous energy and activity in all physical, intellectual and artistic areas. By having such great dynamic, it can happen, that you push others arway, as they feel inferior in front of your capability. If you want, you can emit strong personal charm. One great part of you is loyalty, trustworthyness and willingness to fight for something or someone who needs your help. You should learn to use your energy in a creative sense and only lead it into positive channels. If you fail to do so, it could be that a part of your unfocused energy expresses itself in aggression against others. Especially against those who are as talented as yourself. You can get involved with someone or something very fast. However it's better to not automatically assume everyone else would be as committed as you are. Having a tendency to expect just as much back from others as you are able and willing to give. But not everyone can pursue your goals and accomplish your performance! In addition sometimes there is a tendency to move from dedication to fanaticism without noticing this. But fanaticism is blind. Since it is not always easy for you to show your true feelings, some people percieve you for colder and more distant than you are. This can make you feel lonely and misunderstood. Learn to express your feelings a little more. If you had a failure, it is very difficult for you to initially process it internally. But if you've done this, you are able to invest the same amount of energy in the next thing you will strive for. If something or someone does not interest you, you can be abrupt and tactless. Always make sure to use your powers positively. You can in fact destroy incredibly much when you let negative energy flow into your channels.

International Donations for Super Typhoon Yolanda Victims: Where Did It All Go?

By Alon Calinao Dy: Yolanda survivors are still waiting for the cash donations that supposedly intended to help them for the repair of their collapsed houses and start a new life.

The government agencies might forget to grant financial aid to typhoon victims, but the survivors still remember...

Nearly all countries donated cash funds, but those victims have not felt the support from our national and local government units, particularly from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), except from the NGOs like ABS-CBN Foundation, Inc., and GMA Kapuso Foundation.

According to a reliable resource, DSWD until now receives some cash of money from the donors around the world.  Hundreds of millions of Pesos were kept in the banks, but none of these amounts have reached to the Haiyan survivors these days according to the affected people.

Now many people are asking, where did all these funds for typhoon victims go? I'm also questioning why most Haiyan survivors are not satisfied with the assistance they get from our government?

More than a year from now, I still remember the strongest typhoon in the world that ever landed in the Philippines, which destroyed so many lives.

I'm curious if any of these corrupt people still care for those families who lost everything including their loved ones in the wake of super typhoon Yolanda last year.

Are Filipino leaders corrupt, no conscience, and take advantage of others?

Whenever I travel abroad, I am always proud of my origin that I am a Filipino. I know many foreign nationals have so much respect for our OFWs because they are kind and industrious people.

Again, I'm wondering where did those international donations for Haiyan victims go. I wish I had the answers right at once. If you are going to ask me, I'm not happy on how the government handles the distribution of international aid for typhoon victims.

Lately, I'm very ashamed to foreign donors that the newly constructed houses of our government for the Yolanda survivors had been washed out when typhoon Hagupit, also known as Ruby, made landfall in Visayas region on Dec.7.

At the back of my mind, how did this thing happen? I also have lots of questions to ask: why did these contractors involved use substandard materials to build houses when they have enough budgets? Again and again, where did all those foreign aid and assistance or international donations go?

IELTS Success Story And Tips

By Alon Calinao Dy: The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) tests all four language skills- listening, reading, writing and speaking. Candidates can choose either Academic or General Training. Registering for IELTS exam, you need the following requirements: 2 passport-sized photographs, original/photocopy of passport, payment, and fill up the application form.

You’ve probably heard different testimonies from people about their secrets of success in IELTS, but my story unfolds the blueprints: how I did well in my exam in just twelve days of preparation.

IELTS for me is like a nightmare. If you haven’t read my previous article “Conquering Fear,” then I recommend it for you to take a look. It says there about my struggle with IELTS in 2007.

I know IELTS is tough at the beginning, but you’ll get over it. I understand the feeling you’ve done everything, but it’s not enough to succeed. Yes, the pride that says I don’t deserve this because I study seriously. You’re not alone in that sentiment. I said many times before the phrase “I got it,” but then I was heartbroken when I’ve found out I didn’t meet my expectations.

My friend, it’s not the end of the world, I assure you that. You can be successful too like me, or much better than me. All you’ve got to do is pray to God for enlightenment and believe in yourself that you can actually make it. For instance, if you hear criticism from someone else, don’t take it personally. Try to ameliorate yourself as much as possible and be positive all the time.

Twelve days prior to my examination day, I phoned an examiner if she could be my personal tutor for speaking; I’d just pay for her service. But she refused and informed me she couldn’t help me with my poor English accent.

She further added, “You should have corrected it the time you began learning the language.”

Then I asked her, “Is it possible to achieve a band score of 7 in speaking?”

She answered, “Yes, but you have less chance of success.” Instead of being annoyed after our conversation, I didn’t get upset. I even thanked her for her honest opinion.

On the following day, I told myself I would consider her remark as a challenge. I knew it was less than two weeks before my exam. But still, I could accomplish many things within this time frame. So every day, I tuned in to BBC radio and ESL podcast by Dr. Jeff McQuillan and Dr. Lucy Tse. I often talked to myself alone in front of the mirror, pondering all possible topics from the interviewer.

On Oct. 12, 2013, I took the test. I was so excited that day because I’ve waited for this opportunity. I knew I could pull it off. During the interview, the examiner was so nice to me. I started talking as much as I could and felt good about myself. The entire interview lasted for eleven minutes and went well. He then told me to wait after 13 days for the final result.

After the allotted time, I verified my IELTS score on the Internet. To my big surprise, I received 7 in speaking and 7 overall. Now, I’m so happy because I can renew my Visa Screen Certificate as a professional nurse in the US; It’s really worth a try because I’ve conquered my fear once again. I trust myself when no one is believing in me except my family and our Lord Jesus Christ.

My friend – I made it, and I believe you can do it as well!

IELTS Tips

1. In listening, always read the instructions first. Some say this is the easiest part in IELTS, but I think it’s complicated because you’ll find matching exercises, a variety of accents, filling in spaces, completing information, etc. However, doing daily exercises will sharpen your ears in the long run.

2. In reading, always read the instructions first. Don’t spend too much time in one question when it’s difficult to grasp an idea. Skip it and answer other questions. Apply your scanning and skimming techniques. Look for the keywords and understand what you’re reading. Don’t cheat when doing exercises. In real IELTS, you’ll not be given any extra time.

3. In writing, write eligibly. Read the questions carefully and follow the instructions. Make sure you avoid repetitive words. For instance, if you use the word “important,” don’t use it again in the following sentence. You can use its synonyms “essential” to show your reader that you have a wide range of vocabulary.

In task 1, you need to write at least 150 words; in task 2, you have to reach 250 words in order not to lose marks. Focus on task 2 because it has more score than task 1. You have to finish the test in one hour.

4. In speaking, I think this is the most difficult part in IELTS. Every now and then, you hear from your mentor that you must be confident at all times. The truth is, it’s easy to say, yet difficult to do, right?

Before going to an interview, you must be prepared. Constant practice is helpful in developing self-confidence. It also increases your chance of getting a good mark in the exam. Because no matter how you condition yourself, in an actual interview, you’ll still feel nervous. That’s just a natural occurrence. But you could build faith in oneself through daily practice. You just have to show your examiner you’re ready to get it done. Remember, the more you talk, the less likely the questions from your interviewer.

Sometimes, you speak very fast and make a lot of errors. Better if you can talk slowly and clearly, so that you have time to think and check your grammar. For example, if you’ve made a mistake, try to correct it immediately to give your interviewer a good impression that you’re aware what you’re saying. Also, check for the tense of all the questions before answering. Respond accordingly and don’t fall into the IELTS trap. Be smarter than your interviewer.

Poems of Hope For Yolanda Victims

By Alon Calinao Dy: It has been a year now when Typhoon Haiyan hit the Philippines. I couldn't forget what happened to Yolanda victims because everyone did not expect this natural catastrophe.

I already published this article to rizalhenyo.com where I was one of their writers, but I want to republish this on my personal blog to let readers know how strong, courageous, and united the Filipinos are, especially those Yolanda survivors.

“There are times that we feel we already exhausted all our efforts to do the things that we feel right, but it seems some obstacles form like a stumbling block and things simply do not fall into the right places that we wish to be. Perhaps because God has His own way of keeping us on the right track by facing the challenges in our daily lives to make us stronger.”Roy Lardaus

Filipino Migrant Writers' Society: Alon Calinao Dy, Joel Santos, Joone Ceazar Lacar Manayan, Kathleen Luntao, Roy Lardaus , Expedito Osorio,Jr. (not here)

At the height of super typhoon Yolanda that took thousands of lives in the Philippines last November 8, 2013, Filipino poets from Kuwait made wonderful poems for the victims of Haiyan, and hoping to bring back the spirit of the survivors.

Here are some of the poems we have beautifully penned:

Island of the Braves
By: Kathleen Luntao
Quo Vadis Philippines?
Such a tough year we have
A rough road ahead
Corpses swept by the muddy lake
Still we wear a smile that oh so fake!

The wrath of mother nature is punishing
There is no black and white in such situations
United we stood like homeless children
But take a glimpse of our souls
Then you’ll see brave warriors

Diminutive physique, fragile countenance
But we are ready to face
The dark waves of death from the ocean
We roared intensely, boosting our deflated egos
There is no growth without pain, I guess…

Am I being cursed or exceptionally blessed?
I think I just have a dual citizenship,
I’ve seen beauty and apocalyptic scenes
Suddenly, I’ve reflected that Life knows how to joke
A deadly jest that cost us many friends…

It’s up to us to choose what to become
Be a self destroyer, or a self healer
The aftermath is usually tragic
But I recommend the latter
We don’t need another loser in this island of misfortune.

We need brave islanders
We’ve stood the test of Nature’s fury
We seem like a magnet for calamities
We fell down so many times
But we’ve managed to get up
And built another nipa hut…

We are FILIPINOS, do not forget that!
We will not succumb to disasters
I feel our faith in God is being tested now,
I hail from the island of the braves
I kept saying that in front of the mass graves…

Super Typhoon Haiyan
By: Alon Calinao Dy

Super typhoon Haiyan,
Why have you swept away our City Tacloban?
Why have you killed thousands of our countrymen
Including the innocent children and women?

Look what you have done!
Complete devastation with no food and water,
You have taken them one by one.
Why did you need to slaughter them?

Why do you have to show the world you’re the deadliest?
Why do you come and brought us many tears?
Don’t you know we’re born as warriors without fears.

You have destroyed all our towns and cities,
You have exposed our fight against irregularities,
And now we have nothing left,
But only allies who’ve helped us their very best.

The Victor in You
By: Joone Ceazar Lacar Manayan

Life is a battle, a puzzle we need to solve and a race we must finish
Along with it is an unwinding trek full of happy moments and times of anguish,
As we go through we must be wise and be equipped
Concentration, control and strong will we should always keep.

We might fall and get wounded so as bleed
But the hurt and excruciating pain we must heed
Giving up nor surrendering will never be an option
Instead we must continue fighting guided by our firm determination.

We may cry and shout because of painfulness
But only one thing should reign and that is our eagerness
Many times we might lose and experience defeat
Yet it only prepares us for the victory we are soon to meet.

We are not meant to win every circumstance we undertake
But we are destined to fail sometimes to know our weaknesses and build strategies for future sake
A warrior never quits and will not leave the battlefield doing nothing
He is always on the go and up to something.

Paghupa ng Delubyo
By: Expedito P. Osorio, Jr.

Sa paghumpay ng unos
May katahimikang nakakabingi
At unti-unting iminulat
Ang matang lunod sa luha
At mahapdi
Bahagyang inikot ang paningin
Sa nagkalat na nasawi
Ako’y tumingala
Upang buhay ko’y ipagbunyi.

Nais kong sumigaw
Sa kinasadlakang mundo
Kahit di marinig
Nitong kalat at pira-piraso
Mga guhong tahanan
At nakahandusay na puno
Ang haliging nakasampay
Mga kagamitan at luho
Walang buhay na katawan
Sa lupang di naman sementeryo.

Nais kong tumayo
At muling bumangon
Maihakbang itong paa
Na tinamaan sa paggulong
Tatahakin kong muli
Itong landas na tutugon
Patungo kung saan
Upang muling umahon.

Pag-asa Sa Likod Ng Delubyo
By: Roy Lardaus

Maging buong mundo’y tumulong at nagluksa.

Being inspired for what’s happening around them, They finally have come together to publish a unique visual poetry book, an anthology of immigrant life in the Arab world and artwork from talented people – Hermie Gernalie and Joel A. Santos. Their ultimate goal is to inspire other Filipino migrant writers to have a strong voice in writing, so that they could make a difference and lasting contribution to the next generation. They are as well hoping for support from the Filipino community on their book project entitled Anthology of Filipino Migrants in Kuwait in the Philippines. This book is also available in AmazonBarnes & Noble, and other retail stores around the globe.

Why I Love What I Do

By Alon Calinao Dy: I have firm faith that my blog will help a lot of people. I try to build good values to my readers by providing them moral lessons. A metonymic adage says "The pen is mightier than the sword." I really believe in it. I thank those readers who emailed me last time that I inspired them. I try to pen something that readers will remember after they read them. This is what I want to do.

The author of The Brighter Side of Life

I don't usually say the good things I did, but I frequently help the old, the blind, or the young whenever a helping hand is required. But now, I find a right spot to help and connect to many people. Although sometimes, it is really difficult for me to complete my task because I don't know the different reactions of my readers. I also understand that there might be instances that I will hurt the feelings of other people. As much as possible, I will attempt to listen to the suggestions and comments from my readers. But I can't promise to respond to your every thought. I am here to respect your perspectives.

Being a nurse and former OFW, I realize that the best thing I could do is to share my knowledge and personal experiences. It is true that you can't please everyone, but still, it does not mean you are going to be harsh with that person. Let go of a grudge. It is a headache and it is not healthy in the heart. What I do to stay happy and stress-free, I try to be positive at all times.

Finally, I encourage my fellow writers to jot down inspirational messages to their readers. Write something that will make them better people, and avoid long passages. Some readers might fall asleep before they reach to your main theme. This is just a friendly word of advice for my fellow writers out there.

As I am writing this article, I still feel that each day is a learning procedure. I have many more things to learn in writing and I believe readers are part of my growth. But I am very proud of myself for having readers who appreciate my works. Through my pen and paper, I want to stretch forth my deepest gratitude for everyone.

Thanks for constantly visiting and reading my articles. I know if I will be busy again, I will find a hard time to write. Writing has always been a part of me.

Floyd Mayweather Jr., Mocks Manny Pacquiao in Social Media

By Alon Calinao Dy: The undeafeated American boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr., posted on his Instagram and Twitter accounts, insulting the current WBO welterweight and eight-division world champion Manny Pacquiao.

Mayweather said, "....Miss Pac Man is broke and desperate for a pay day. Your Pay-Per-View numbers are a joke."

Ever since Pacquiao has been challenging Mayweather for the biggest fight of the century since boxing fans wanted them to fight each other.

Although the Filipino boxing champ has the desire to battle Mayweather after his bout against Chris Algeria on November 22, the rest of decision now lies in the hands of Mayweather if he is willing and does actually mean what he said after he beat Maidana a couple of days ago.

Mayweather told, "In May, I'm going to have a big surprise for you."
Indeed, Mayweather can fight other boxers who are in category B.  He can have rematches against Maidana, Marquez and Cotto or fight new opponents in the likes of Danny Garcia, Tim Bradley, and Amir Khan.

However, People wanted to see is the match-up between Floyd Mayweather Jr., and Manny Pacquiao next year.

Period, period, and period.

If this fight would materialize soon, I would move to Vegas or definitely watch this competitive fight between the two most influential and greatest boxers in boxing history today.
